Project Brief

Scope: Lebanon's first integrated solid waste management system serving Greater Beirut Area and Mount Lebanon (50% of country's population). Two mechanical sorting facilities (northern and southern Beirut suburbs) with 9 sorting lines recovering recyclables from commingled waste stream and retrieving organic fraction for composting. 750 tons/day tunnel composting facility for aerobic biodegradation of organic fraction. Recyclables storage warehouse. Upgrade project: 4 additional sorting lines increasing total capacity to 4,200 tons/day, optimizing efficiency and improving recyclable recovery percentage and compost quality. 24/7 operation. Integrated data management system tracking all incoming/outgoing vehicles across all sites including sanitary landfills. Day-to-day operation/maintenance supervision, detailed design for upgrade works, construction supervision, contract management on behalf of CDR.
Challenge: Achieve four CDR objectives: control chaotic waste management situation in Beirut following civil war end, operate sorting facilities per relevant norms and standards, ensure additional sorting lines designed and constructed to EU standards, and control environmental impacts. 9 existing lines operated over design capacity - requiring urgent upgrade. First Lebanese government attempt at integrated solid waste management in post-war context with limited institutional capacity and politically sensitive environment. Maintain continuous 24/7 operations while executing major upgrade and expansion works.
Approach: Supervised day-to-day operation and maintenance activities ensuring compliance with norms and standards despite over-capacity operations. Prepared detailed design studies for upgrade works of existing sorting facilities and new planned facility to EU standards. Supervising upgrade works of existing 9 lines and construction of 4 new additional lines (currently under execution) - coordinating construction while maintaining 24/7 operational continuity. Managed contract on behalf of CDR client. Integrated data management system designed to accurately track all incoming/outgoing vehicles across entire waste management system (sorting facilities, composting, landfills) - enabling operational control and accountability. Upgrade to 4,200 tons/day total capacity increases recyclable recovery percentage and improves organic material quality for composting - directly improving final compost product quality.
Status: Facilities operational 24/7, upgrade works under execution

The Brief
Abdali Boulevard Company aimed to achieve two objectives:
• Creating a prime pedestrian experience in Amman
• Developing a district that is economically attractive to investors coming from multiple industries (hospitality, corporations, retail, etc.)
Our Response
Laceco responded to the above objectives by:

• Designing a consistent urban framework that nevertheless provided a diversity in the individual architectural character of buildings
• Curating a seamless pedestrian experience in a site that had a challenging topography and was exposed to dominant winds
• Anchoring the site along three platforms linked to each other by a continuous game of terraces, stairs, suspended bridges and esplanades that gently slope down the length of the development
• Conducting value engineering and cost optimization studies to preserve economic viability of the development
